Cape Town locals help the homeless during the lockdown despite opposition

Peter Wagenaar, a real estate agent, and his wife have been cooking for the homeless people in Sea Point during the lockdown which has stirred up tension in the affluent suburb of Mouille Point.

Peter had been using his car to distribute food to homeless people in Sea Point, which caused anger among some residents. In the early hours of 6th May, his car was set ablaze and nothing but charred metal was left after the fire.

Wagenaar has had confrontations with police officers since he started feeding the homeless. A video went viral in which a police officer threatened to arrest him for feeding the homeless despite Wagenaar having a permit.

Wagenaar wakes up every day at 4am to start cooking. Breakfast is given to the homeless people from 7am to 9am on Beach Road and Fritz Sonnenberg Road.

Wagenaar feeds breakfast and dinner to around 80 to 100 homeless people get which he buys from his own pocket.

Although many people have applauded Wagenaar for his good deeds, not everyone appreciates his actions.

According to Covid-19 lockdown regulations, the homeless were supposed to have been accommodated in shelters, among them a tent city in Strandfontein.

However, a large numbers of people are still sleeping on the streets and looking in bins for something to eat.

There has been a dispute in the community on whether individuals can give directly to the homeless or food should be distributed through a shelter.

There have been cases of those who gave directly to the homeless who have been harassed by those who think it is wrong.

Inspite of all this, Peter has now teamed up with Marta Salcedo who's a dance teacher from London currently residing in Cape Town since the Lockdown and they have raised over £1200 in 48 hours for their Giving Back project through online donations using social media.  Martha has been posting updates on her YouTube channel showing how the generous donations are being used to purchase much needed items from a local resident's charity shop including winter jackets, blankets, sock, coats and other essentials for over 300 people. Peter and his small team have been packing up all the items in bales and transporting them in their cars to provide to the homeless.

The residents continue to work hard every day to prepare meals and provide to the homeless.
Marta is collecting donation for the Giving Back project and you can donate online towards the cause using Paypal.
